Pupil Premium and recovery premium
The Pupil Premium is allocated to children from low-income families who are currently known to be eligible for Free School Meals (including those within the last 6 Years) and children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months.
Pupil Premium at Westlands First School
The government provides this grant in order for schools to close the attainment gap between disadvantaged children and their peers. It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium, allocated to schools per pupil, is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility.
At Westlands First School, we use evidence-based approaches as our starting points and then carefully adapt them to our specific school context. Research carried out by the Sutton Trust, has revealed that the effects of high quality teaching are especially significant for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. This is why, we invest a large proportion of our grant into whole school programmes and training to ensure that all of our pupils, but in particular, our disadvantaged pupils, receive the highest quality teaching in the classroom.
We take a three tiered approach to our use of the Pupil Premium Grant:
Tier 1 Quality of Teaching For All
Tier 2 Targetted Intervention for Identified Pupils
Tier 3 Wider Strategies (e.g. curriculum enrichment opportunities)
Based upon our evaluations, we devise a Pupil Premium Strategy each year, which is reviewed on a termly basis to ensure that our spending is effective.
